Haven’t posted in a while and haven’t gotten any further (^_^) in the game, but I did just get a package in the mail. I had no idea what it could be until I saw the return addressee as Mark Cope. I plan to record an unboxing video (who knows when it’ll get uploaded).

Josh, (imo) you made a better choice going with physics (and I guess business)!

I received an undergraduate degree in math a few years ago but have always had a decent grasp on grammar (grammar was taught in school). I actually explain the difference of farther/further in the videos I have uploaded (as well as mention it in passing in my others which have yet to be uploaded). To reiterate, farther is used for measure of length (miles, kilometers). Further is a measure of degree, scope, or magnitude.

I just remembered another grammar issue: compound sentences without a comma preceding the conjunction (in most cases and).

I took an ellective grammar course in college (filled with many an lost English/humanities major), and the professor explained that many “grammar rules” (opinions) have changed over the years. It seems it is somewhat more acceptable to leave out commas now, most commonly for series in compound subjects (“He, she, and I went home.” would leave out the comma after she) and compound predicates (The dog barks, jumps, and runs.). I think some places have stopped stressing the use of commas in compound sentences as well, but I do not recall seeing an instance in publications. There were also instances (mostly in the Tutorial) of awkward comma and semicolon (and 1/2 colon uses), but that may just me being anal. Although, it does seems you have a much better handling of commas and semicolons than your in-game persona does!

The way I worded the puzzle issue was weird. I ran from the Wraith, going through the entrance way I came in. I then entered the puzzle room to see the Wraith in its original position. The puzzle was the same layout when I left; the Wraith was not blocked by spikes but did not give chase. I used the white portal looking thing to reset the puzzle. I think the puzzle should have reset upon reentering the puzzle room.

What I had meant by getting stuck:
Imagine player is in a Cave XYZ. There is a hole in the wall. Upon going through the hole and emerging, player is in room A. Room A has a gate blocking entrance to another room – Room B. There are 3 torches. The gate opens when all 3 are lit – puzzle is the player lights by selecting the torches in correct order which may cause another to be lit as well or extinguish, basically a lights-out type puzzle. Anyway the player resets the puzzle (all torches unlit) by using the white portal OR leaving the Room A. Player solves and goes through the gate and onto Room B which just has a NPC and chest. Now going back to Room A, the puzzle should not be reset. If it does, the player is stuck. That’s what I meant.

That’s all for now.

Someone estimated the game to take about 30-40hrs, but I feel party level gives a better idea of how close you are to the end. I take a long time as I inspect entire towns, talk to all npcs, and check objects for hidden items. Gametime is under 3 hours but actual time I spent (recording) is almost 5 (over 6 is I count times where my recording got messed up).

I’m using a third party controller. It was designed to be used for SFIV so the triggers are moved around on the controller. I couldn’t get LT/RT to work in game settings as well as joytokey but LB/RB work. By inconsistent response times, I mean sometimes I tap BXY and nothing happens so I have to push harder. It’s likely the controller as it belonged to my friend before he got a ps3 to play fighters on.

I’m curious as what people have their controller buttons set to.

I typed up a bunch of suggestions etc earlier but was too long so will just email you guys that later on. However some are probably quick fixes or somewhat significant.

Fishing
I only fished at the first location so not sure if it’s unique or consistent across other areas. The fishing option only pops up when you get to the end of the dock. If you cancel out, you can’t get the fishing option again unless you move from the current tile and then back. I think the option should popup if you use the action key.
The fishing menu options for rods and bait are all the same font color. I think rods and bait should be grayed out and not selected if you don’t have them so that eliminates the need for following text to let the player know. The time spent fishing should be lower in my opinion. It takes around 7-8seconds – I’d prefer 3-4s.

Buying/selling items
Not sure if it’s the same with selling items. When buying items (store etc), the amount is 1. You can increase by 1 by pressing the right direction. The left direction decreases by 1 (doesn’t go to 99 or the max you can afford/have as I would have thought). Then I noticed pressing up direction seems to increment by 10 (not multiples of) making it 11, 21, 31, etc – this should probably be 1, 10, 20, 30, etc. I’m assuming down direction “undoes” the up direction.
I’m not sure how most games do it, but I would think up/down increase/decrease by 1 and right/left go to max and decrease from the max.

Grammar/typo
I mentioned this in my videos I posted (and subsequent ones not uploaded yet). The incorrect use of “farther” instead of “further” in the game Intro (when Dante and charter are in that forest). I THINK farther was used incorrectly once again in the Tutorial (Josh’s dialog) but not sure.

Map
When I select the Map, it seems there’s variable lag until it actually appears. Sometimes it seems quick, others I’m waiting a bit (maybe 2-3seconds). I’m not that far in the game (Miner Cave/Dry Gulch), but the map seems “awkward” to use in general.

Puzzles
In the Miner Cave, the sign mentioned the Wraith. I thought I would have to fight it if it got me (it just returns you to the entrance of that room. When flipping switches the wraith started chasing me; I was able to outrun it and leave the room and come back. I think the puzzle should reset upon reentering. For puzzles I haven’t gotten to yet, puzzles should reset upon entering from the “entrance” because it’d be bad if a player decides to go back after entering a new room and might get stuck in a puzzle room.

Sephox, can you give a breakdown of steps on what you did to get a ps3 controller to work?

I’m using a 3rd party wired xbox 360 controller which is not giving consistent response times – triggers also don’t work.

Tutorial video is up
<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxDgIZ9a3e4>

Will be uploading two ‘videos’ of just commentary later – they were previous Tutorial video attempts (first time I forgot to record video and second time the software closed in the background!).

I have two gameplay videos recorded: exploring Oakwood and fighting monsters. I just need to clean up the commentary files, sync up timing, and mix and encode into finished version. Then of course upload and wait for processing. I hope to have these up by midweek.

Muhammad, I use Audacity to record my commentary as well clean up the created file. I think the AC unit is causing more noise than my mic, but there was still noise/static when I did test recordings without the AC on. Also my laptop runs really loud and has a cheap usb cooling fan under it. With all that, I’m actually satisfied with the resulting quality – once I clean it up that is!

If you have a YouTube account, please comment on the videos if you have comments about certain parts etc. I plan to add annotations of my videos when I have the opportunity.

Josh, I sent an email right before this post.
Have you watched my first video? My main issues with the game so far has been dialog/writing and just the wording of text in menus etc. My commentary goes over that for the most part. Also were you the one that decided on most of the literary allusions?

Muhammad, glad you appreciate my way of commentating. Can you elaborate on the audio issues? It was my first video ever. I also spent the past few days reading up on audio and video recording. My setup is dated: nearly 5 yr old laptop and old gaming headset with mic. I also have an air conditioning unit less than 2 feet away from me so that probably does not help with the noise.

Josh, if you could do that it would make things easier for me especially since my account is brand new! The video I have up is the first video I ever uploaded and my first recording and commentary (aside from some test runs). Actually I had another video (same video but the borders were messed up), and both videos had some of the audio blocked (some game music) so I had to dispute the copyright issue. An actual letter might help with future uploads. Is there a way to send you a private message?

I ran into other technical issues as I had two recording sessions of the Tutorial fail! I have the commentary for those and will upload that as I offer my opinions on many of the Tutorial content.

I got a successful Tutorial video encoding now so that should be up by the end of Sunday along with the two failed videos (commentary only, no video content).

I was able to get actual gameplay in. I go through Oakwood – talking to all NPCs, clicking on objects to check for text, and looking for hidden items! All gameplay is blind (baring any failed recording) and unedited. My commentary is live and, I promise you, the most amount of commentating you’ll hear (compared to others’ – check my first video to find out).

Video finished processing.

I’ll be recording the Tutorial and some gameplay in a few hours and hope to have that up.

Download Joytokey:
http://www.ac.auone-net.jp/~jtk/joytokey/JoyToKey_en.zip

I had to set all buttons in the game menu to “-” so the game doesn’t recognize the gamepad. Initially the button I had mapped to ‘shift’ (for dash) conflicted with the menu command.
