Customizing characters through skills is an integral mechanic in the Last Dream series. As with previous Last Dream series games, skills are learned through “Skill Points” (SP) which is earned both through battle and can be purchased via “SP Orbs”.
A new mechanic that we’re excited about in Last Dream II is the addition of skill upgrades. This allows for further customization of the skills that you use the most. In the “Skill Learn Menu” image, the Gray Mage’s “Cure” skill has been learned along with 3 upgrades:
- Amplify I and Amplify II (these increase the amount of HP healed)
- Efficiency I (this decreases the amount of MP to use the skill)
Skill upgrades have the same requirements as normal skills: a required level and SP cost
In addition, skill upgrades have pre-requisite upgrades (e.g. Efficiency II requires that Efficiency I is learned).
In the menu image, you’ll also notice two “orange” colored skills at Level 10. These two skills are actually special skills called “overdrives” that do not require SP to learn, but instead the player is allowed to choose one of the two overdrives and the other is locked. But don’t worry… you can find special items in-game to unlock the other overdrive later.
We’ve chosen to color code the skills to make it easy at a glance to know what is available:
- White means that a skill is unlearned but learnable
- Green means that a skill is learned (but not mastered via all upgrades)
- Purple means that a skill is mastered (i.e. all upgrades have been learned)
- Red means that a skill cannot yet be learned (either due to level or SP cost)
- Orange means that an overdrive has not yet been learned
- Gold means that an overdrive has been learned (not shown)
