We were starting to begin the process of creating the White Mage battle sprite poses when we realized a problem. The original sprite (shown below) had a key problem. Can you see it?
The problem is that you can’t see the White Mage’s hand, which is fine when roaming around maps, but becomes a problem in battle when she must hold her staff or orb.
Luckily, there was a simple solution thought of by Co-Developer Seth. The White Mage is asymmetric and the mirrored view of the White Mage (originally the “Right” facing view) has the hand exposed. By mirroring the sprite for roaming and battle, we were able to solve the issue. It also required some modifications to the running animation to always expose the arm, but it was much less work than reworking the sprite completely to add a sleeve.
There’s still some work to be done in terms of adding the weapon movement in battle, but we’re approaching the point where the White Mage can engage in battle!
